GrowthRise Mastermind Recap July 28, 2026
Today we held our weekly GrowthRise Mastermind call. Below is the recap post on the topics we covered today.
π― Full-Service / Growth Agency Trend (Marketing + Biz Dev + Sales)
Challenges: Agencies that combine marketing, business development, and sales under one roof are operationally complex and require deep industry-specific knowledge to deliver real results.
Advice: Firms that successfully do both almost always have a primary skill set they lead with β either marketing or sales β rather than claiming equal strength in each. They also tend to specialize in a specific industry vertical, which is what makes the combined offering credible. When evaluating one, identify which side is their actual core competency and whether they know your vertical.
π£ Lead Magnet Strategy (E-book / Cybersecurity Content)
Challenges: Deciding whether to gate an e-book behind email capture or offer it free, how to distribute it chapter by chapter, and which channels to use β LinkedIn document ads, Meta, or Reddit.
Advice: If you gate it, use email delivery as the stated reason for asking, which raises opt-in rates and ensures real addresses. Consider publishing it as an actual print-on-demand book for credibility, with a free digital opt-in alongside a paid physical copy. Offering early chapters free before gating the rest is a viable test. Aim for engagement beyond the email capture β let readers ask the author questions, similar to "ask an expert" retail models.
π₯ Part-Time Contractor AE Quota & Compensation
Challenges: Setting appropriate quota expectations for part-time or contractor account executives is difficult, particularly when "part-time" is loosely defined and hours aren't firmly committed.
Advice: The full-time AE benchmark is $500Kβ$1M in new ARR per year, and an AE should generate at least 5x their total compensation. For a part-time or contractor AE, scale that benchmark proportionally to the hours actually committed. Define "part-time" concretely before setting the number. For deeper sales team management questions, bring in someone with dedicated sales leadership expertise.
π€ OpenAI/ChatGPT Ads Effectiveness
Challenges: Early testing of ads on ChatGPT showed poor conversion for B2B β $5,000 in spend produced only 9 leads, none of which converted downstream.
Advice: The core issue is audience: B2B buyers predominantly use paid ChatGPT plans and therefore don't see ads at all, which makes the channel structurally ineffective for B2B targeting. Don't allocate meaningful budget here for B2B offers right now. The channel may still be worth a small test for consumer products, where more of the audience sits on the free tier.

Best Advice
The through-line this week was matching your investment to where the audience actually is. Paid ads on ChatGPT failed for B2B not because the creative was wrong but because B2B buyers sit behind paid plans and never see them β worth remembering before funding any new channel. On content, gating works when the gate has a reason: promise delivery by email, and consider turning the e-book into a real print-on-demand title so the free digital version borrows credibility from the paid physical one. On hiring, anchor to the numbers β $500Kβ$1M in new ARR for a full-time AE, at least 5x total comp β and scale proportionally rather than guessing at what a part-time contractor should produce. And when evaluating a combined marketing-and-sales agency, find out which discipline is genuinely their core and whether they know your vertical.
